Anna is looking forward to her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a great job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. Which is why she is less than thrilled about being shipped off to boarding school in Paris--until she meets Étienne St. Clair. Smart, charming, beautiful, Étienne has it all...including a serious girlfriend.
But in the City of Light, wishes have a way of coming true. Will a year of romantic near-misses end with their long-awaited French kiss?
“POINT ZERO DES ROUTES DE FRANCE. In other words, it’s the point from which all other distances in France are measured. It’s the beginning of everything.”
From the moment that I picked up this book, Stephanie Perkins grabbed me with her effervescent descriptions and made me fall “ohlala” in love with Paris, St. Clair, and Anna. The colorful descriptions of Paris brought out a fun and magical to it that pops out at you like a delicious assortment of French macaroons!
Everything began with Anna getting shipped to school in Paris. She is originally from Atlanta and she is quite settled and happy with her life until she has to pack up her whole life to spend her whole senior year in Paris. Now you would think she would be thrilled to have this once in a lifetime opportunity but this is definitely not the case. Anna is quite your typical American teenager who relishes in the comfort of American life and dreaming of one day becoming the next Roger Ebert. Then she stumbles into Etienne St. Clair and her whole world lights up like the streets of Paris…
Pop Culture References (Jordan Catalano & Angela Chase)
Etienne St. Clair is difficult to describe. Etienne St. Clair is one of those beautiful boys who you were afraid to speak to in high school. He was that kind of guy that made your throat constrict and your tongue dry. Kind of how Angela Chase felt when Jordan Catalano would walk by her locker.
“It’s like comparing a gourmet truffle to a Mr. Goodbar…”
Etienne St. Clair is one of those guys that gets voted as Most Approachable in a high school year book but he is the one guy you are scared to even croak out a “Hello” to.
When Anna and St. Clair meet Anna doesn’t know what to do with herself. Etienne opens up the luminous city of Paris to Anna by taking her to the historical and breathtaking locales in Paris that she was reluctant to see. This book will take you on a sightseeing trip to the Notre Dame, the Pantheon, Jardin de Luxembourg, quaint Parisian cinemas and the charming little bookstore Shakespeare and Company.
“The more you know who you are, and what you want the less you let things upset you.
This book warmed my heart like a creamy cup of chaud (hot chocolate in French). This book is truly about a first love. However more than anything this book is about growing up, going through changes, and making difficult decisions. And what better place to do that than in Paris? 🙂
