The Bookish Fairy

Young adult, magical realism, and every book in between infused with fairy dust...

Books I DNFed in 2018: The Year of Distraction

December 28, 2018

The year of 2018 I was notorious for DNFing books! The craziness of the beginning of the school year and the holiday season made it quite challenging for a book to hold my full attention! Not to mention that I worked two jobs this year and I have been working on my novel! Actually all of these books that I DNFed I truly wanted to finish and had every intention to read but I just couldn’t fully see it through!

Now all of these books on the list are quite popular and they are those backlisted books that I should have read a long time ago! I am also notorious for taking forever to read backlisted books!

Here we go…

1…

This is the number one backlisted book especially since it was published back in 1847! I tried to read this through audio…big mistake! I learned that I am not able to digest classic literature books through audio and I connect better with dense books like these by physically reading them instead. Oh, and I was trying to finish this book and then read the Jane Eyre retelling of Brightly Burning by the time I met Alexa Donne! That didn’t happen obvi but she is amazingly cool in real life!

2…Sublime Karma

When I first started my book blog about a year ago I had every intention of reading this book by this independent author. Then I got super distracted by all the books that were about to be published, recently, published, I received a bunch of arcs of books that I really wanted, and the rest is history! I had this book on my Currently Reading shelf literally FOREVER and this is the year I finally took it out. Part of me still wants to read it but another part of me still wants to read all the other books more. Unfortunately, because of this experience, I no longer review independent books.

3…Hocus Pocus & The All New Sequel

The Sanderson sisters would have been shocked to find out that I never really finished this book!

Halloween is my favorite month of the year and my TBR for Halloween is massive but the month of October was actually the busiest month of the year for me! I tried so hard to finish this book but it couldn’t hold my attention and by the time I wanted to pick it up, it wasn’t Halloween anymore. I am a seasonal kind of reader and I love to read holiday-themed books on the actual holiday so it just wasn’t the same for me anymore. Till next year witches!

4…One of Us is Lying

Dude…when I first started to read this book I thought it was so freaking good! I am still kicking myself for not finishing this book especially since I met the author and she is so lovely! I should have finished this book because the first half was amazing and completely sucked me in! I might pick this up on audio next year because I heard amazing things about the narration! I love character-driven books and I just need to finish this book already!

5…11/22/63

I committed a book nerd sin and watched the mini-series before reading the book and I have to say that the series BROKE ME! I am someone that always cries at emotional moments during tv shows and movies but this show left me a sobbing mess! My dad let me borrow this book and I started to read it over the summer and I just couldn’t fully commit to the book especially because the sheer amount of pages I had to read! Books that have over 500 pages intimidate me but I fully intend to read this book because I have never read a Stephen King book before and the story had such an emotional impact on me!

6…A Court of Thrones and Roses

I have been talking about this book since I started my book blog because of the insane hype surrounding it! Even though I am not a huge fantasy reader, I am so curious to read it mainly because this book is so HYPED in the YA world. I have heard all the controversy with this book and I was curious to see what everyone is talking about. I am actually proud of myself for finally picking up this book and beginning to read this book because I have been wanting to read it for a while! Unfortunately, I didn’t finish it because other books came out and I got distracted ONCE AGAIN! I am hoping that I can mark it as read on Goodreads so I can just get on with my life already!

Oh no I didn’t know it was a sad book! I am definitely curious now. I left off in the part when she started to develop feelings for Mr. Rochester!

I read Jane Eyre about three times before I actually read it the whole way through.

Yeah, I need to be in the right mood to actually finish reading Jane Eyre! I will probably revisit over the summer since I usually read the more dense longer books during that time!

I also DNFed ACTR, but I loved One of Us is Lying. Jane Eyre is on my TBR for 2019, so hopefully I find it more enjoyable.

Yeah, I just keep getting distracted and fantasy books are not my usual genre but I really do want to give ACOTAR a try. Now One of Us is Lying is a book I need to finish already because the book sucked me in quickly! Now that there are so many Jane Eyre retellings I want to finish the original so I can start reading the other books too!

Omg I love the ACOTAR series. I haven’t finish it yet bc I am scared af bc someone spoiled me on our FB group on what’s about to happen and I just can’t find the courage to read the last book yet. The 2nd book, ACOMAF, is much better than ACOTAR tho. I hope you’ll be able to pick it up again son.

Oh no, that sucks that you got spoiled! I really hope that I get to read it one day! I have heard so much about these books! Good and bad! They are the kind of books that you either love or hate it seems. There are just so many books and I get so distracted sometimes!

It’s not that I didn’t enjoy the book it’s just that my attention span couldn’t read it yet. I usually save the denser books for the summer which is what I should have done honestly!

It takes a flat plot, hard to follow characters and just nonsense for me to DNF.

I agree with you! I DNFed all of these solely because I was super distracted by other books and there were many author events happening that ruined it for me because I had to immediately read their books!
